Like their wild relatives, domestic breeds are very hardy and can thrive on a diet of cellulose, starch and sugar. They are very effective grazers and don’t require large pastures. These creatures eat a great variety of grasses and in winter they are fed hay and oat.

There are many breeds of these animals. The breed Zalawadi is found in the Surendranagar and Rajkot regions of Gujarat, India. They are kept for milk, meat and hair production. The Zalawadi is of the Gujarati type and has erect corkscrew shaped horns.
