Goats - History

Goats were among the earliest domesticated animals. Goats' remains found in Asia allow the domestication of Goats to be dated at between 6000 and 7000 B.C. Their ancestry is fairy clear. The major contributor of modern Goats is the Bezoar Goat, which inhabits the mountains of Asia Minor.

Goats - Health

A healthy Goat is alert and inquisitive, with bright eyes and a clean nose, with normal appetite, without changes in the udder, in milk-texture, taste, color, or smell. Its coat is silky and shiny, and the skin is smooth. The Goat stands comfortably on all four feet and walks with equal weight on each foot. The body temperature of a healthy Goat is 39-39.5 C, the heart rate is 70-95 beats per minute, and the respiration rate is 10-30 per minute.

It's important to keep the Goats' feet trimmed to remove excess growing. In badly overgrown feet, the sole may have degenerated and become crumbly. Young bucks should be dehorned at 2-7 days of age by a surgeon only and with anaesthetisation. Freely grazing Goats are subject to worm infection; so safe grazing should be maintained, especially for kids. A pasture that was not grazed by Goats or sheep in the previous year is safe because the larvae have died off. If safe grazing is unavailable, use anthelmintics to control the worms in your holding. Also Goats should be tested for lice, which may damage their skin, hair, or even cause anemia.
